NAME: Will Mckean
DATE OF BIRTH (MEANING OLD BUGGER OR NOT!) 01/04/89.
TIME KITING? 2003 till present
FAVOURITE SPOT? ooooo, thats a hard one as always. Westward Ho will always be high up on my list as it offers so much variety in terrain! And there are a few little 'local' spots that are always good fun......... but i cant tell you about those ;)
MOST MEMORABLE SESSION? Probably riding in a demonstration at the biggest PKRA world tour stop in Germany. Having a 6ft bmx kicker to jump off and an arena surrounded by nearly 1000 people watching was a great feeling! I cant wait to go back there. OR riding on Lake Superior dry lake in America at midnight. Its 4 hours from any civilisation so no light, sound or anything...... just a perfectly clear night sky with the moon lighting up the lake bed. AMAZING. As the American kiters would say 'AOXOMOXOA'
WORST KITEMARE? AHH, Ive had a few. One that springs to mind immediately would be the session i had at Saunton Sands at Atmosphere 09. it was blowing a strong 45-50mph southerly and we where right up the estuary end of Saunton. i was on a 4m BIV and powered! i was working my way around the upwind side of a large pool when a seriously big gust came through. I got plucked off the floor straight down wind towards the pool. i managed to turn my buggy to land straight, but as i hit the water with such speed, it cartwheeled me straight over the front of my buggy. I got dragged upside down, headfirst through the pool, out the other side where i managed to flip myself upright again. I then proceeded to enter another pool which flipped me and i got dragged through face down. I landed the kite as i came out the other side soaked and a bit shaken. It could have gone a lot worse if i didnt have the kite skills to fly my kite without looking at it and keep it high!
Or theres always that time my line snapped........ mid jump over a large rock pool on the 4m BIV. I hit that pool like a sack of shit, much to the amusement of Richy.
WHAT KEEPS YOU KITING? My Love for the sport. I cant get enough of it! There is nothing better than being down the beach with your mate having the time of your life! The people you meet in this sport are never boring and always great people! For me as well, I get a real buzz from being one of the pioneers in Buggy Freestyle. Its such a new sport and has got so far to go and I'm really happy that I'm part of it!
WILL IS WITHOUT DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST BUGGIERS YOU WILL EVER SEE. GUESS THAT IS WHY HE HAS WON SO MANY COMPETITIONS AND IS CURRENTLY UK AMATUER CHAMPION!! TO SEE WHAT HE CAN DO WITH A BUGGY IS INSPIRATIONAL BUT DOES HE LET THIS AFFECT HIM?...NOT A BIT! I MET SURFERS THAT GOT A BIT OF COVERAGE IN THE SURF MAGS AND TURNED INTO KNOBS OVERNIGHT, WILL HAS GOT MORE TALENT IN HIS THUMB THAN THEY HAD IN THEIR BODIES BUT IS STILL A WELL CENTRED GUY. HE IS A CENTRAL PART OF THE WESTWARD HO! COMMUNITY CORE AND A GENUINE GREAT GUY TO TALK TO, IF YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES HE WILL ALWAYS HELP....IT IS A PLEASURE KNOWING HIM AND WATCHING HIM...KEEP IT UP BUDDY...
